April Meeting

The April meeting was well attended, the speaker Sheena Norquay gave us a wonderful slide show of her influences from Orkney. Her work was very inspiring. 19 attended her workshop on the Thursday, we all thoroughly enjoyed it learning new hand sewing techniques making a small landscape.

What a wonderful show and tell we had. You all do brilliant work. Thankyou all for sharing.

The trunk show we will be doing will be called Village Life, size will be 11” x  14” portrait. It would be lovely to see you on the 11th April to drop in for a chat and advice if needed. Some of us will be at the Church from 3pm till p.m..

The May practical evening will have nice kits for you to either work on in the evening or take home to enjoy. Hope to see you.

Speaker for 2nd April 2014

Sheena Norquay will be giving her talk “My Work and the Orkney Influence.

She will show how the landscapes, seas and skies of Orkney have influenced her work.

She is also interested in using quilted lines to create graceful movement, sculptural shapes and decorative patterns. Inspiration comes from relief sculpture, circles, patterns in nature, man made patterns and decoration on other textiles.  Most of the lines are free machine quilted, a technique which is my specialty. It is fascinating how the surface of the quilt comes alive with the quilting.

Although she uses free machine quilting in most of her work, the work shop that will take place on the 3rd April is hand quilted.  The workshop is entitled“Winter Landscapes”.  See Below

March Meeting

We were delighted to have Maryke Phillips as a speaker. Her work was very inspiring and the materials used were wonderful colours in a mixture of dyed wool felt and space dyed threads and fabrics.  Her quilts and wall-hanging were hand finished with beads  that gave a weight that made them hang beautifully. With the products for sale it should give us all the incentive we need for our own wonderful projects.

We hope to see some of your work at the next meeting’s show and tell.

I will list some web sites that give you free patterns for your own personal use, and also tutorials for you to watch at your leisure.
www.sewcannshe.com  This website has daily tutorials.
www.allpeoplequilt.com Have free patterns ranging from bags to quilts and wall hangings.
www.freepatterns/info  This website takes you to blogs with patterns as well as tutorials.
www.ravelry.com  Is a website for the knitters in the group

March Speaker

The talk by Maryke Phillips is My Stitching Obsession

Maryke lives in Mid Wales and works from her studio at home. She has been interested in textiles for many years and made my first quilt in 1984 using Laura Ashley fabrics. In 1996 she completed a two year City & Guilds course at Westhope College.  She carried on studying part two with Marie Roper. She makes textile hangings using machine and hand stitching. She loves colour and this is very important to her in the development of my work. She has exhibited my work at major shows and has had two exhibitions Sew Inspired and Sewing Solo. Five years ago Batiks n Beads was born and she sells on -line, at exhibitions and visit quilt groups with lovely batik fabrics from Bali and beads from Japan, she also sells Stef Francis threads and hand dyed felts and scrim.

12th February 2014 Quilts from the February Meeting

Starting with the AGM we got the business end of the meeting over very quickly.  Then on to the show and tell. Our members have been very busy with quilts and bags, and even two very cute dollies made by Jo.

A talk called Tartan and Shortbread Holdall was given by Pat and Janet using well over 60 wall hangings hired from Quilters Guild region 16 which showed a mix of different sewing techniques. We were so impressed and can’t wait to get started on our own collection.

Next month we have Maryke Phillips. Her talk is called ‘My Stitching Obsession’. Maryke will bring lots of goodies to temp you to buy and make your own projects.

We look forward to seeing you and your show and tell in March.

Happy Sewing
